Well, it’s quite simple really, no other material offers the versatility or environmental benefits of aluminium.
It is infinitely recyclable making it the perfect choice for balancing the demand of a growing economy (and population) while considering the needs of a planet in crisis. Since the first industrial production of aluminium way back in the 1880s, 75% of all the material produced is still in use today.
The Benefits of Recycling Aluminium
Recycling aluminium requires 95% less energy, and produces 95% fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than manufacturing primary aluminium. That is a GHG saving equivalent to taking 900,000 cars off the road for 12 months.
The global aluminium recycling industry prevents close to 170 million tonnes of GHG from entering the environment every year.
Recycling 1 tonne of aluminium avoids the emission of about 9 tonnes of CO2 – just 1 tonne of CO2 is equivalent to driving nearly 3,000 miles.
Recycling aluminium reduces the use of natural resources and chemicals (caustic soda, aluminium fluoride and lime) and eliminates the need for bauxite ore to be mined.
Aluminium Drink Cans
The aluminium drink can is the world’s most recycled packaging container.
Eight billion aluminium drink cans are sold in the UK every year, and each one could be recycled over and over again, saving energy, raw materials and reducing landfill waste.
A used aluminium drink can can be recycled, reprocessed, remade and ready for re-sale in around 60 days.
In a whole year, that one can could be recycled eight times, saving enough energy to make 160 new cans.
Making one aluminium drink can from raw materials uses the same amount of energy that it takes to recycle 20. Here’s a little perspective – recycling just one aluminium drink can saves enough energy to power a TV for three hours. That’s a lot of Friends!
Globally, close to 70% of all aluminium drink cans are recycled, making it the world’s most recycled packaging product. Because aluminium is infinitely recyclable, it can be reused in applications vastly different from its previous purpose, and it can also be recast into its original form.
Nearly 90% of the drink cans sold in the UK are made of aluminium and the current recycling rate for drink cans stands at 55% so there’s still plenty out there to collect and recycle.
Recycled Aluminium & Vidorra
At Vidorra we want to do as much as possible to reduce our impact on the planet. This is why our homeware range consists of entirely recycled products and we are very pleased to offer a beautiful and unique recycled aluminium collection.
The aluminium used in our collection is sourced from India where recycling is yet to become ‘the norm’. However, as interest grows and more time is invested into it, the more viable and stable the industry will become. At the moment India’s per capita consumption of aluminium is still one of the lowest at 2.2kg against a world average of 8kg, so there is still lots of room for improvement, awareness and education. New projects are currently being developed by the Indian government and pioneering companies to ensure the resources and tools are readily available to allow India to grow a more sustainable, buoyant, recycling sector.
Please view our Recycled Aluminium Collection today, not only is it 100% recycled, it is also fairtrade, BAFTS approved and absolutely beautiful. And as an extra bonus, if you spend over £25 you”ll receive a free enamel Fairtrade badge.
Peace and Love, Maxine
